Installation Methods

This guide covers installation methods for products that use the permanent base clip system, including the Lite Clip Strip and the Minleon Universal Clip. These methods are intended to help installers choose the best mounting option for the surface, location, and project type.

Before You Start:
Always test a small 5-10 foot section before committing to a full installation. This helps confirm placement, adhesion, spacing, and compatibility with the mounting surface.

Installation Methods

Glue Installation

This is the most common method, especially for horizontal surfaces, railings, or areas where removal may be necessary. Choose an adhesive compatible with PVC/vinyl, such as Goop or E-6000. Use a medium-viscosity adhesive that can bond the strip’s inner surface and the mounting area. Avoid using glue on peeling, dirty, or loose paint. For vertical or curved surfaces, hold the strip in place with tape until the adhesive sets. Apply adhesive in nickel-sized amounts every 6 inches and at each end of the strip.

Double-Sided 3M Tape

For interior applications, double-sided closed cell foam tape is another option. Tape thickness will vary depending on the mounting surface. Follow the tape manufacturer’s instructions carefully for best results.

Staples

Stapling is ideal for wooden surfaces and other materials that can accept staples. Use a flush-finish stapler to prevent damaging the strip. Pneumatic staplers that countersink staples may cut through the material. For outdoor use, choose galvanized, Monel, or stainless steel staples. Place staples every 6 inches and at strip ends, alternating sides. Flat crown staples, 1/4" to 3/8", are recommended instead of rounded staples for better hold.

Screws

Screws may be used when appropriate but typically require pre-drilling unless self-drilling screws are used. Test a few options before completing the installation to determine what works best for the surface.

Pop Rivets

Pop rivets can be used when necessary, following the same 6-inch alternating spacing as staples. Use rivets with large heads to help prevent pull-through.

Nails and Tacks

Nails and tacks can be applied similarly to staples. For outdoor installations, use galvanized or weather-resistant materials to help prevent corrosion.

Surface Compatibility Notes

Surface / Application Recommended Consideration
Metal or aluminum flashing Good option for taped or adhesive-backed strip when the surface is clean, dry, and non-porous.
Wood fascia or trim Staples, screws, nails, or adhesive may be used depending on the condition of the surface.
Brick, concrete, or porous surfaces Adhesive tape is not recommended. Test fastening or adhesive methods before full installation.
Peeling, dirty, or loose paint Do not rely on adhesive until the surface is properly cleaned, dried, and stabilized.

Residential Installation Guidance

Most residential installations include outlining eaves, rooflines, doors, and windows. Eave and fascia outlines are among the most common because they highlight the width and architectural lines of the home.

  • Fascia / Eaves: When possible, install the strip on the underside of the fascia board. If that is not possible, attach it to the face of the fascia board, preferably near the lower edge and away from the roof edge.
  • Clearance: For C7 or C9 bulbs, confirm there is enough clearance for the socket and wire. A minimum of approximately 2 inches from the fascia board to the wall or obstruction is recommended.
  • Windows: The strip may be installed inside the frame, on trim, or on outside siding depending on visibility, access, and surface type.
  • Doors: Choose a location that avoids accidental contact with the lights or strip and prevents lights from being caught or damaged when using the doorway.

Commercial Installation Guidance

Commercial installations often include parapet caps, rooflines, window frames, and architectural features. These applications are commonly used on freestanding buildings, shopping centers, and commercial facilities where clean outlines and repeatable seasonal installation are desired.

  • Parapets: Install the strip close to the viewing edge when possible. A setback of approximately 1/4" to 1/2" may help hide the strip when not in use while still allowing bulbs to be visible from below and from a distance.
  • Commercial Windows: Indoor or outdoor installation may be used depending on visibility. Select a location that allows the installed bulbs to be seen clearly from outside.
  • Commercial Rooflines: Install only in accessible areas and evaluate the surface for safety and suitability before installation.
Safety Note:
The manufacturer highly recommends not placing lights on wood shingle roof material due to possible fire hazard. Always evaluate the installation surface and use appropriate safety practices.

Best Practices

  • Test a small section before completing a full installation.
  • Clean and dry all surfaces before using adhesive or tape.
  • Use weather-resistant fasteners for outdoor applications.
  • Secure the strip approximately every 6 inches and at each end.
  • Confirm bulb/socket clearance before mounting the full run.
  • Use temporary tape support when adhesive is curing on vertical or curved surfaces.
